PART II CHORD PROGRESSIONS

WHITE KEY TRIADS

Lesson 1
 Root progression
  down by third

Play down each column from top to bottom, first with the right hand, then with the left hand an octave lower. The first arrow points to middle C.

The slanting lines show what notes to move and which notes they go to. The notes always move up to the next white key, which becomes the root of the next chord. The heavy arrows point to roots.

First the top note moves up, then the middle note, then the bottom note, and then the top note again -

and so on.

The top and bottom chords in each column are always C Major triads.

The bottom chord of each column is exactly the same as the top chord of the next column.

The roots go backward along the alphabet three letters at a time: C, A, F, D, B, G, E, G.

This root motion is called root progression down by third.
