My musical compositions are intertwined with experiences as a
paleontologist of the Mojave Desert & Great Basin, and the wild places,
creatures, plants, decrepit motels, late-night fast food joints, junk
heaps, hot springs, but above all the rock exposures thereof. These are
the starting points of a type of mysticism which feeds the musical ideas.
It is hard to imagine that the pieces could exist without these things.
Thus some of the song titles.
The ideas present themselves, often fully formed, in dreams or otherwise,
and are then played with & manipulated to form the compositions.
A mountain of steeply dipping sedimentary rocks, teeming with the entities
of past inhabitants of the planet through several million years of deep
time, so much so that it seems to emit a soft glow, though this could be
mistaken for the light from the impending moonrise - this could give rise,
perhaps, to a musical idea.
Or perhaps the thought of an asteroid twirling end over end in an irregular
orbit - the patterns of its rotation.
My writing style is influenced somewhat I think by Keith Jarrett, but
various other things as well. It takes inspiration from Scarlatti and
Rameau and their small concise pieces. Also it is somewhat informed by
20th century "out" music - Elliot Carter & the like.
