In the late '90s Steve and I would occasionally get together and play through new tunes that one or the other of us had been developing. We were visualizing another recording project and Steve knew a prospective engineer, Jaime Valenzuela, who owned World Alchemy Records and wanted to add to his catalogue. When Steve was diagnosed with ALS the idea of recording took on a new urgency, so we got off our butts, assembled some tunes and started recording another CD. The compositions are all by Steve and/or myself. This was to be the third project we had worked on together. The first two were Steve's CDs "Captured" and "The Last Blue Sky" wherein he took on the bulk of the compositional tasks. On the current CD, we chose material with complementary writing styles and some measure of cross-influence. The tunes are somewhat contrapuntal for a jazz style, with Steve's tending towards the melodic whereas mine might be called episodic. They are partly through-composed, with varying amounts of improvisation. For the recording we did ten new basic tracks with drummer Russ Henry, and added two more tracks recorded in earlier sessions with Chester Thompson. We added flute, bass and keyboards to these tracks, including a few weird or lyrical sounds that Jaime coaxed out of various synths. Walt and Bruce Fowler, on horns, and Mike Miller, guitar, added greatly with their solos & ensemble playing. Jaime's expertise and dedication to the project are what enabled it to be completed.Ed Fowler | |||
