I always wanted to make a straight ahead "Jazz " record but the form of solos, trading fours with the drummer, etc. is only good for jam sessions where there needs to be some common ground between the players. Compositions should be more thought out and should include harmony, as well. This is the concept for my CD, "Entropy". I love the chords of tunes, thus "Flames" explores different harmonizations of the same tune. I I wanted to include a beautiful ballad (Love Dreams), playing just the melody, not having a note contest; and a free rhythm tune, where the melody's time is independent of the drums and bass (Canon de Chelly). Naturally, all this serious music has to be tempered with a shot of ruthless comedy whenever possible (The Rat, Man's Epitaph, Bash Fit for a King), and I just had to hear Kai Akagi play his incredible piano on "Seven Steps to Heaven". I love how the pianists, and everybody else, play on this record! Hope you like it! Bruce Fowler | |||
